Our Story

Experience the knowledge-enriching power of mathematics.

How did the Mathema Gallery come to be?

The Mathema Gallery was established by Dr Calvin and Rosemary Irons who decided to build the gallery to share their love of mathematics and the thousands of books, artefacts, and ideas they have collected and created over their collective 120 years of work in the disciplines of mathematics and mathematics education.

One of their aims is to remove much of the mystery associated with mathematics and the misperception that mathematics is only symbolic and difficult. People of all backgrounds and levels of education can be encouraged to see mathematics as an enabling rather than inhibiting force in their lives.

“Mathematics is everywhere, and everyone can do well in mathematics” – Rosemary Irons.

Visitors are most likely to see Calvin and Rosemary at the gallery as they enter. Feel free to ask any questions. They are always happy to discuss mathematics!

Cal and Rosie have also established the Mathema Foundation, and educational charity that supports the gallery and other activities including the sponsoring of scholarships. They also established the Mathema Publishing Trust, a book publisher that produces original mathematics books with sales that greatly help financially support the Foundation and Gallery activities and operations.
